Like many of you, I’ve watched my toddler curiously peek over the kitchen counter, eager to see what I’m doing. That’s what inspired me to find (and create) kitchen tools that help kids get involved safely. If your little one wants to help out in the kitchen, this list is for you.

Here are my tried-and-true must-have kitchen tools for toddlers learning to cook. Each one is designed to support confidence, independence, and safety.

1. Learning Tower (aka Educational Tower)

This is hands-down the number one tool every parent needs if their toddler shows interest in helping out in the kitchen. A learning tower (also called an educational tower or little helper) is a sturdy, child-sized platform that lifts your toddler up to counter height safely and securely.

Unlike stools or chairs, a learning tower is built with guard rails, so your child can climb in and out independently and still stay safe. Whether they’re stirring pancake batter or watching you chop veggies, they feel included and capable.

Pro Tip: If you have more than one toddler at home, look for a double-wide learning tower for siblings or twins. These double towers allow two kids to cook side-by-side without the fighting or falls!

2. Wooden Knife

Once your toddler gets the hang of helping, they’ll want to do more than just watch. That’s when you introduce a wooden knife. These kid-safe knives are specially designed for little hands. They’re great for slicing soft foods like bananas, cucumbers, and cheese, no sharp edges, just child-led cutting.

This simple tool helps toddlers learn hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and basic kitchen safety. Plus, it gives them a real sense of pride, they’re actually cutting something, just like Mom or Dad!

3. Silicone Placemat

Cooking with toddlers often turns into cleaning with toddlers (or cleaning because of toddlers!). That’s why a good silicone placemat is a game-changer.

These mats stick to the counter or table and create a non-slip surface for mixing, rolling dough, or playing with flour. Easy to clean, dishwasher safe, and usually BPA-free. They save your kitchen and your sanity. Bonus: They often double as art mats for painting or playdough fun.

4. Mini Mixing Bowls and Tools

Kiddos love having their own tools. A set of small mixing bowls and toddler-sized utensils can make a big difference. Think whisks, wooden spoons, and spatulas that fit tiny hands.

Having their own gear makes your little one feel important, like a real chef in training. It also helps reduce spills and makes them more engaged in following instructions (at least for a few minutes!).

5. Apron and Chef Hat

Okay, this one might seem more fun than functional, but trust me, toddlers love dressing up like a chef. A little apron and hat make cooking feel like an adventure. And hey, it keeps their clothes (mostly) clean too.

Getting dressed for kitchen time helps establish a routine and signals that it’s time to focus, kind of like putting on a uniform for school. Plus, it's super cute for photos!

6. Measuring Cups and Spoons

This one’s a sneaky way to introduce early math skills. Measuring ingredients lets toddlers practice counting, volume, and hand coordination. Plastic or silicone measuring tools work best; they’re lightweight and easy for small hands to grip.

Let your child scoop flour, pour water, and level off sugar. It might be messy, but it’s all part of the learning process!

7. Step-by-Step Recipe Cards for Kids

Toddlers love structure, and they thrive with visual cues. Simple, step-by-step recipe cards with pictures (instead of just words) help toddlers follow along. Choose cards for easy recipes like fruit salad, sandwiches, or no-bake cookies.

Make it a weekly ritual: one recipe together every Sunday. It teaches consistency and builds excitement.

Why It All Matters

Letting toddlers join you in the kitchen is both adorable and meaningful. It teaches responsibility, independence, and real-world skills. They learn to follow instructions, try new foods, and develop a love for helping out.

As a fellow mom, I know how easy it is to feel overwhelmed with the endless options out there. That’s why I created Mommy’s Little Helper Co. to simplify parenting tools that actually make a difference. Our products are designed with your child’s growth in mind and your peace of mind.
