What No One Tells New Parents About Toddlerhood

What No One Tells New Parents About Toddlerhood

Rachel Adetayo

First of all, welcome. I see you. I was you. And let me tell you, there’s so much that no one really warns us about this stage. Sure, people love to talk about the sleepless nights of newborns, but toddlers? That’s a whole different adventure.

As a fellow mom, I want to share a few things I wish someone had told me, in simple, honest words, from one parent to another.

1. Toddlers Climb Everything (And I Mean Everything)

I swear, one day they’re wobbling on two feet, and the next, they’re scaling the couch, the countertops, and anything that stands still for more than five seconds!

That’s why I started looking into safe climbing structures for our home. Something indoor-friendly option like play gyms with monkey bars that burn energy without turning your home into a danger zone. It’s amazing how much they learn just by moving their little bodies in different ways. Plus, it keeps them off the furniture (sometimes).

2. They Want to Help Even When It Gets Messy

I remember the first time my toddlers insisted on helping me make muffins. Flour. Everywhere. But the joy in their eyes? Worth it.

Toddlers love to copy us, especially in the kitchen. A kitchen tower (also called a learning tower) became a lifesaver in our home. It lets them stand safely at counter height, without you worrying about them falling off a chair or stool!

Now, instead of clinging to my leg while I cook, my little helper is beside me, mixing batter or just sneaking blueberries. It makes them feel included, confident, and so proud.

3. You Don’t Need Every Toy in the Aisle

Did you know that toddlers don’t need the flashiest, noisiest toys? What they need is open-ended, simple play. Things they can climb on, build with, and imagine around.

Montessori furniture totally changed how we played at home. Pieces like balance beams, play gyms, or a wooden slide not only kept my kids engaged longer, they also looked nice in our living room (because let’s be honest, Canadian homes don’t always have tons of space).

Less clutter, more purposeful play. That’s a win in my books!

4. Create a Space That Works With Them, Not Against Them

Ever feel like your home is being taken over by toys? Me too. But once you set up a small play area with playroom furniture that was their size and easy to use, everything shifts.

Toddlers thrive when they can reach their books, climb onto their chair, or help clean up without always needing you. It builds independence, and you’ll see how proud they get when they can “do it myself.”

Choose quality pieces that grow with them. Trust me, your future self (and your future budget) will thank you.

5. You’re Doing Better Than You Think

Let’s be real: toddlerhood is a lot. One minute you’re laughing together, the next there’s a meltdown because the banana broke in half. But through all the chaos, your love and effort shine through. There’s no perfect way to do this. You’re showing up, trying your best, and that’s more than enough. So give yourself grace and drink that coffee!
