As a mom, I know how tricky it can be to juggle meal prep while keeping your little one safe, happy, and entertained. Whether you're a first-time parent or have a few years of toddler experience under your belt, we’ve all been there, trying to chop veggies, stir soup, and keep our toddlers out of trouble at the same time.
That’s why I started Mommy's Little Helper Co. to offer products that make parenting a little easier. These products are designed to help your toddler feel included and safe, while also giving you a little breathing room in the kitchen.
If you’re looking for ways to make meal prep a more enjoyable experience for both you and your toddler, here are 5 simple tips that really worked for us!
1. Let Them Join You in the Learning Tower
One of my absolute favorite tools in the kitchen is the foldable learning tower. I know it can be hard to find ways to keep your toddler entertained while you’re cooking, but with a learning tower, they can safely stand at counter height and feel like they’re really part of the action. Whether it’s stirring, washing veggies, or just watching you work, it helps your toddler feel engaged, confident, and included. Plus, you don’t have to worry about them getting into dangerous stuff on the counter!

2. Create a Little Play Area in the Kitchen
Another tip is to set up a small play area in your kitchen. I love our 6-in-1 play furniture because it’s so versatile. It’s not just a space for your toddler to play, but also a safe place where they can climb, explore, or even sit with you while you prep. You can also set up a little nook next to your kids to color, play with soft toys, or enjoy a snack. This way, they’re nearby but still have their own space to feel independent while you get things done.
3. Give Them Their Own Tools to Play With
Kids love to feel like they’re helping. That’s why I always give my toddlers something safe to use while I’m cooking. A wooden chopper knife is a great tool to help them get involved without worrying about safety. They can safely chop soft fruits or vegetables and feel like they’re really contributing to the meal. Just make sure you’re supervising them closely, but letting them feel like they’re “doing it themselves” can really boost their confidence.
4. Make Meal Prep Fun with Sensory Play
Meal prep doesn’t just have to be about cooking, it can also be a sensory adventure for your toddler. Let them feel the textures of the ingredients you’re using, like squishing soft tomatoes or feeling the uncooked pasta. You can even make a little game of it, asking them to describe how things feel or smell. Not only does this keep them engaged, but it helps with their cognitive development and is a fun way to bond.
5. Turn Meal Prep Into a Musical Time
Music is a toddler’s best friend, and it can make meal prep so much more enjoyable. I always play some upbeat kids’ songs while I’m cooking, it keeps the mood light and fun! You can even sing little cooking-related songs together. It’s a great way to keep them distracted and entertained while still staying on task.
I know it’s not always easy, but meal prep doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little creativity, some help from your toddler, and the right tools, you can turn it into a bonding experience for both of you. It gives your little one a sense of independence and responsibility while making your life a little easier.
Wrapping Up
Meal prep can actually be a fun way to bond with your little one while teaching them new skills and keeping them engaged. By using tools that help keep your toddler safe and involved, you can turn these moments into opportunities for growth and connection.
