As a mom, I am always looking for ways to support my child's growth and development at home. The tool that I have found to be the most valuable to increase independence & foster our relationship is a learning tower. Learning towers are essentially vertical play structures that offer a range of benefits beyond just playtime. They transform your tantrumy-two-year-old, into an engaged kitchen helper, everyday! The above picture is actually the twins - Naomi & Joanna - helping at 15 months old.
My biggest reason for wanting to get a kitchen helper or toddler stool was to be able to cook dinner without resorting to screen time. In today's digital age, it's important for children to engage in physical activity and hands-on learning, and learning towers offer just that. It was important to me that there was no screen time before the age of two, as is recommended, and, that after two it was still kept very limited. In fact we don't have a TV in our house for that purpose!
One of the biggest advantages of learning towers is that they provide a safe and secure environment for children to explore and learn. With enclosed sides and a platform at the top, I can trust that my child won't fall or injure themselves while they are playing and learning. I loved especially when they were a bit older and could push it up to the counter alone to help themselves to a glass of water, etc., while I was doing God knows what with the others ;)
In addition to safety, learning towers offer a variety of opportunities for children to learn and develop new skills. My kids can use the kitchen helper to practice gross motor skills like climbing and balancing, as well as fine motor skills like hand-eye coordination to prep foods. They can also use the tower for imaginative play, pretend play, and role-playing games, which helps them develop their creativity and critical thinking skills.
What I love about learning towers most of all though, is the role they play in fostering relationship and making memories with me. They really did transform my motherhood journey with twins. Once they were old enough to stand in them, I started cherishing motherhood more because I could share my favourite childhood recipes, make Chocolate chip cookies on a rainy day, and do it all with them by my side and involved. We have so many sweet memories I will cherish for years to come on some of the days that started out most rough!
Overall, as a mom, I cannot recommend enough investing in a learning tower for your child. It offers a safe and engaging space for them to play, learn, and develop a wide range of skills.
